What is B2B fulfillment?

Business-to-business (B2B) fulfillment is the process of managing and delivering goods from one company to another, such as retailers, wholesalers and distributors. Typically, these are large-volume orders that require customized packing, shipping and strict retail and distribution compliance standards. When this process is completed successfully, products are delivered on time, in the correct quantities and in a manner that complies with all applicable requirements.

How B2B fulfillment works

Fulfillment involves freight shipping, coordinated logistics and careful scheduling. Because these orders are usually larger than B2C shipments, fulfilling them requires careful inventory and warehouse management, including effective shipping solutions to reduce disruptions and delays.

The B2B fulfillment process starts when a business places bulk orders through an online platform, EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) or directly with a supplier. Once the order is received, your fulfillment provider will pick, pack and ship it according to the specifications. This ensures compliance with all requirements, such as proper barcoding, palletization and labeling.

Depending on the order size, B2B fulfillment uses freight shipping, LTL or FTL shipments, which are usually palletized and transported by carriers that can handle large-scale logistics. 

Parcel shipping, using services such as FedEx, UPS and USPS to deliver single packages to residential addresses.

Fulfillment speed

Prioritizes reliability and accuracy over speed. Orders must arrive on time to ensure that retail and distribution operations run smoothly and without supply chain disruptions.

Often requires same-day and two-day shipping to fulfill diverse customer requirements and expectations. 

Cost

More expensive due to the size and complexity of bulk shipments, which have higher shipping and handling costs. To keep costs low, expenses for freight shipping, warehouse storage and compliance-related expenses must be strategically managed. 

Lower per-order costs because parcels are smaller and use standard packaging and shipping methods.
